The Secret to Writing Effing Effective SEO Copy
The Answer Might Surprise You (Because it’s Pretty Basic, TBH)
Making it to ‘Brand Name Google Search’ Territory with SEO Copy
One of my non-animal babies, a wonderful client of mine called Christmas Brothers, has recently ‘hit the big time’, as far as I’m concerned.
Currently, the keyword that drives the most traffic to their site is ‘Christmas Brothers’. Twenty-five per cent of traffic, in fact, is generated through people Googling the professional Christmas decorators’ brand name.
“Well, durrr – of course, that’s what people search for; that’s what they’re called, innit?”
– Smug Reader
Yes, smart arse, their name is Christmas Brothers, but until people know about them – until the public really has them in their consciousness and subconsciousness – nobody would know to Google them in the first place. And getting there is all thanks to SEO copy.
The Moonpig Example
It’s like, until Moonpig.com became one of the top internet-based greeting card companies online, people would have searched for things like, ‘last minute birthday cards’ or ‘personalised greeting cards’. Now that Moonpig has done an amazing job at marketing, folk simply Google ‘Moonpig’.
See?
(By the way, I’d love to set up a competitor company called TwattyBadger.com someday.)
How Did Christmas Brothers Make it to ‘Brand Name Google Search’ Territory?
I’m glad you asked, because this is where I come into the story, and it’s always nice to be involved in a tale of success.
There’s nothing fancy at all about what we did in the beginning. It’s all down to writing informative content that includes those first, important and very basic-sounding keywords. Christmas decorators, for example.
I and the amazing web team behind this gorgeous site got into the minds of the people who would be searching online for services like theirs and included these words in the copy.
My job, as a human, non-GPT AI SEO copy kinda gal, was to write copy that included those important, but let’s face it, boring keywords and make it sound fun, jingly and Christmassy – but crucially, draw people in and make them want to click that Call to Action (CTA) button. For those CTAs, we have everything from the classic, ‘Get Started’ to the fuzzier, ‘Cozy* Me Up!’.
How important is SEO? Well, before you make it to Brand Name Googlable – and even beyond – it’s extremely important.

What’s the Secret, Then?
Ah, yeah – there isn’t one.
The only secret to writing cracking SEO copy that cuts through the crap and cajoles people into clicking on your company website is: to use those fundamental keywords.
The only word of wisdom I can also add here is that it takes time – time to
🤓 Research
✏️ Write
📈 Monitor
🤏 Tweak
✏️ Rewrite
Ad nauseam – without the ‘🤢’.
How Important is SEO to a Business?
If you want to have a website that will drive the traffic you want to your website, help to generate sales and generally make a splash in your chosen industry, SEO copy is ve-he-ry important indeed.
But I’m keen to tell you that it’s a long game, and one that you should enter into only if you see the art of writing SEO copy as a conjoined twin sister to your business – not as a playdate you have for one hour every three months.
Can I Have a Mug of Decaff Earl Grey Now and What’s the Conclusion?
Yes, in a minute – I’m nearly done.
The conclusion is that, because my job is to write SEO copy, I know this stuff will make or break your website content – but I am also here to help you make it helpful, informative and shareable because that’s all key stuff too.
But don’t just take my word for it
Google currently holds in high esteem any website that includes SEO copy but also a website that sounds friendly, puts the reader’s needs first and is even downright entertaining. While Google has a lot of secrets, there’s a lot of info they share with the world, explaining the fact that they’re looking for content that actually means something and doesn’t just serve a purpose.
So, in the end, there is somewhat of a secret to including SEO copy in your website, but the secret is that it just takes understanding, time and a fair amount of practice.
